Ecstatic Baptist?

Well it took a little over 100 years but it appears that the Charismatic Movement is on the verge of conquering one of it's last remaing foes in the form of organized religion. "Dwight McKissic A Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary board of trustee member told a chapel audience on Aug. 29 he speaks in tongues "in his private prayer life" -- prompting the seminary to issue a statement saying most trustees and faculty members likely would disagree with his theology." But latter "the seminary issued a statement, saying it is "honored" to have him serve as a trustee and to visit campus as a chapel speaker." McKissic was also quoted as saying "Not all Baptists believe that the gift of tongues went out with the completion of the New Testament," McKissic told the audience. "Some of the foremost thinkers and leaders and theologians among Baptist life believe tongues is a valid gift for today." I would like to see that list?

The seminary also was quoted as saying "In keeping with Baptist convictions regarding religious liberty, we affirm Rev. McKissic’s right to believe and advocate his position. Equally in keeping with our emphasis of religious liberty we reserve the right not to disseminate openly views which we fear may be harmful to the churches." In the book by Ben Bird entitled "The Truth About Speaking in Tongues." he says "To say that speaking in tongues is a harmless practice, and is all right for those who want to, is an unwise position when information to the contrary is evident. Speaking in tongues is addictive. The misunderstanding of the issue of tongues and the habit, plus the psychic high it brings, plus the stimulation of the flesh, equals a practice hard to let go of. But to equate much speaking in tongues with advanced spirituality is to reveal one's misunderstanding of Bible truth, and to reveal one's willingness to be satisfied with a deceptive and dangerous counterfeit."

In deffese of the President of Southwestern he did make the decision not to continue the video-streaming of this message lest uninformed people believe that Pastor McKissic’s view on the gift of tongues as 'ecstatic utterance' is the view of the majority of our people at Southwestern. However all messages preached in Southwestern’s chapel are available for purchase by contacting Audio-Visual Learning Center at Roberts Library. It's clear that there was no clear response to Rev.
